Mbaise Association Annual New Yam Festival 2013 USA

Queens, New York: Recently, the Mbaise Community in the New York Area recently held its Annual New Yam Festival (aka – “Iri ji”) 2013 in New York. It was a night of cultural display and entertainment. Our staff was there to bring you exclusive photo shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The weather was in a good mood as Mbaise indigenes as well as their guests arrived for the new yam festivities at the Obi-Igbo banquet hall in Queens New York. After opening prayers and presentation of kola-nut, followed by opening speeches by the chairman of the occasion and the President of the association, dinner was served. The youths then presented a drama sketch delivered in igbo language as a boost for the learning and speaking of Igbo language among the younger generation Mbaise indigenes in the USA. The main event of the night – breaking of the new yam – was then carried out and members then purchased new yams from the bulk tied up on the make-shift yam barn. Event  MC, Bethels Agomuoh then invited guests to the dance floor to dance away into the early hours of the next morning. Picture coverage below
