Nigeria – Dominion Farm’s land grab in Taraba State
Many governments in Africa, including Nigeria have been leasing large tracts of lands to multinational farming conglomerates on multi-year leases, and as a means to boost local agricultural yields towards self-sustenance and reducing food importation. However, this movement in foreign direct investment in agriculture has also resulted in the unintended displacement of thousands of farmers and communities across Africa, from lands upon which livelihoods were supported.
This presentation will focus on a land grab in progress in Gassol, in Nigeria’s State of Taraba and which threatens the livelihoods of up to 45,000 locals. Dominion Farms, a US-based company is at the center of the Gassol land grab, but also has operations in Yola Uganda, which will also be examined.
Presenter Sami Disu is a reporter and policy analyst working for the SaharaReporters Media Group. Sami Disu has earned a graduate degree in public policy from Western Carolina University and has worked with numerous groups shedding light on the human consequences of ill-conceived programs of foreign direct investment in African agriculture.
