York, New York: : The Nigerian Lawyers Association (“NLA”) recently held its annual Merit Award Dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Times Square in New York City. The 2006 NLA Merit Award was presented to Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, distinguished scholar and highly influential and respected diplomat. The Honorable George Bundy Smith, Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, delivered the keynote address at the occasion.

Gambari receives the NLA Merit Award
HOW
IT HAPPENED: The
event commenced in earnest with a cocktail hour during which members of
the Nigerian Lawyers Association mingled with guests and distinguished
personalities from all facets of life - attending from Nigeria to
England, and from many parts of the United states. After the cocktail,
attendees proceeded to the hall for the main events. NLA Secretary, Yomi
Ajaiyeoba, Esq., supported, by the Indoda Entsha Percussion Ensemble
gave a unique cultural rendition of the National Anthem. Incumbent
President, Placid Aguwa, Esq., delivered the opening remarks. Dinner was
served. Keynote speech was given by Honorable Debra A. James , Judge of
the New York County before Honorable George Bundy Smith, Associate Judge
of the New York Court of Appeals delivered the keynote address calling
for more black Judges at the Bench. Shamsey Oloko , Esq.,
introduced the Merit Award recipient, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, United
Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs. Special remarks
was made by Chief Bayo Ojo, Attorney General of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria. Francis Ononaji, Esq., gave an eloquent vote of thanks before
the hall was declared open for free all-night-dancing which continued
for several hours.
